2014 Speed Bump 30 – Brees vs. Manning vs. Rodgers Sponsored by Dynasty Football Warehouse (Jeff Melbastad)
Here we go, 30 days later, our 30th and final poll. We take a look at the top three quarterbacks likely drafted this year in Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers.
In total we covered 123 players, or just over 12 rounds of fantasy action in a typical 12-team league, with 25 QBs, 35 RBs, 55 WRs and 8 TEs. At least one player from every team was covered with 7 from the Saints and 6 from the Colts leading the way. The final probability of getting all 30 polls correct came at an astronomical 1 in 513 Quadrillion, 587 Trillion, 385 Billion, 819 million, 546 thousand.
To help us answer, today we welcome Jeff Melbastad from Dynasty Football Warehouse to bring us home strong!
GUEST EXPERT ENTRY
Brees vs. Manning vs. Rodgers, Jeff Melbastad selects (08/12/14): Peyton Manning.
At DFW we’re focused on the dynasty value of players. The long-term outlook if you will. Under such a focus our answer would undoubtedly be different than the one we give here. In redraft it’s extremely difficult to make a case for any QB outscoring the mighty Peyton Manning and he’s our unanimous pick (amongst the three DFW co-owners) in this poll.
In DFW’s 48-team forum member league Peyton was good for 488 points in 2013, which is 58 more points than the next highest scoring player (Drew Brees) in the league, 147 more points than the next highest-scoring QB (Phillip Rivers) and a whopping 226 points more than the average top-32 QB. To say he outscored his competition at the QB position, not to mention the entire league in general, is putting it mildly. Manning was the king of fantasy football by a large margin last year and there’s little reason to doubt he won’t do so again in 2014. Sure, he lost Eric Decker who was a fantastic #2 WR but Manning is such a cerebral, methodical QB that it won’t harm him as much as it would other QBs. He’s still got Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas and Wes Welker as well as the addition of Emmanuel Sanders to throw to. That’s a solid offensive weapon set and Montee Ball should come into his own in the rushing game.
We get that Brees and Rodgers provide stiff competition and an injury (like Rodgers suffered last season) could turn this prediction on its head but to recommend any QB other than Peyton Manning as the #1 QB in fantasy football drafts would be a mistake. Brees challenged Manning in 2013 as best he could. Rodgers would have been right there with them had he not been injured and probably has a better receiving corps. Still, we like the Denver Bronco to be a regular season stat-monger for 2014, even if he does flounder in the playoffs again. After all, we as fantasy football owners could care less what happens after our fantasy season is over right?
