Changes galore – Michael Vick at quarterback, Chris Johnson at Running Back for the big splash and top free agent target Eric Decker at Wide Receiver. Rex is getting offensive and Bill Cervi has the scoop.
The Jets were able to maintain almost their entire staff with exception of their LB coach who was replaced by Bobby April III and Special teams coach Thomas McGaughey replaces Ben Kotwica who left to join the Redskins.
KEY FREE AGENT DEPARTUES
QB Mark Sanchez – The one time USC golden boy, who came in to the NFL ranked by many ahead of Matt Stafford, signed a 1 year deal with the Eagles to back up Nick Foles.
RT Austin Howard – Signed a 30 million dollar contract with the Raiders, was starting RT.
CB Antonio Cromartie – Starting CB significant loss, signed 1 year deal with the Cardinals.
KEY FREE AGENT ACQUISITIONS
QB Michael Vick – Vick may finally be worth his ADP this year as he is around the the 30th QB taken in 2014 mocks to date…OH! Seriously Vick may end up winning the starting job that is of course until he is hurt running for five yards on first and ten.
RB Chris Johnson – Johnson will be in a time share with Chris Ivory but CJ should still have RB 3/ flex value in PPR leagues this year or higher if/when Ivory gets hurt.
WR Eric Decker – Decker should be a key contributor in 2014 but stats will suffer without Manning.
RT Breno Giacomini – Was Seattle’s starting RT the last 2+ years, will try to replace Austin Howard.
PRESEASON FANTASY OUTLOOK AND PLAYERS TO WATCH
QB – Michael Vick was brought in to push second year QB Geno Smith. Vick could win the starting role but he will most likely be injured at some point so Geno should play as well.
RB – Do not write off Chris Johnson completely this season. Chris Ivory is a good early down RB but he does not have the big play ability that CJ still has to some extent, especially in the passing game. Make no mistake this will be an ugly time share early in the season, but Ivory is not durable and CJ is the superior talent and third down back. Monitor this backfield closely this offseason.
WR – It is hard to expect any of the Jets WRs to have an impact in FF leagues this season, but WR Eric Decker may end up seeing a significant amount of targets and be the king of garbage time in 2014. While a repeat of last year’s numbers in Denver may not be possible he should still be a solid #3WR, if the Jets can get average production from QB position. Third year WR Stephen Hill may be on the roster bubble in 2014 and will really need to play like the player the Jets thought they drafted in the second round to make the team.
TE – The Jets desperately need a quality TE and some recent NFL mock drafts have projected North Carolina’s TE Eric Ebron to the Jets in the first round. If not Ebron I would look for the Jets to add a TE in the draft. Whoever that TE may be, they may end up seeing reps early in the season, so stay tuned.
